About Us

Taranaki Housing Initiative Trust (THIT) was established by Toi Foundation in 2023, with support from community and emergency housing providers, Councils, public sector organisations, lenders and local organisations that are delivering housing support initiatives across Taranaki. Collectively, there is recognition that housing availability, affordability and quality is a regional priority that needs urgent action.

We support the housing sector by giving housing providers and the development community access to capability as well as planning and financial mechanisms that support the development and preservation of affordable housing in Taranaki.

We seek to build awareness of the Taranaki Regional Housing Strategy and progress some of its key interventions with leadership, capability, facilitation and investment.

Why is this needed?

There is increasing demand on Taranaki’s housing system. Together we need to facilitate and invest in urgent, practical and action-orientated solutions to increase public housing, tackle fundamental affordability issues and improve quality across the rohe for Taranaki people.

Taranaki Housing Ecosystem

Ka Uruora and iwi targeting main area of need. Whenua Māori funding available but not being unlocked.
Region better than national averages, but disparities across region in terms of housing inequality for Māori, and housing quality disparities across Districts. Long-term issues are typology (1 & 2 bedrooms), affordability pressures, and limited info on supply for Stratford & South Taranaki.

How we can help

Implementing interventions from the Taranaki Regional Housing Strategy will take collective effort. There are already many organisations and individuals working in this space that are passionate about greatly improving long-term outcomes for our region.

Taranaki Housing Initiative Trust can support housing sector initiatives with facilitation – taking more of an active role in facilitating solutions, helping other organisations to come together and deliver.
